Had normal D3 issues with MMI screen gears and compressor the only thing diesel specific was dpf filter needed regenerating.I was going to remove it but was advised not to by my MOT guy.
If I were you i'd just go and drive all three and see what you like the best.

I drove S8, i liked it a lot, i have also driven normal A8 4.2 which did not impress, just a normal refined car, never had a chance to drive W12 and i really wonder what its like, we do have Audi dealership here but they dont do trade ins and such, so its hard to get my hands on diesel and W12, will see.

i really like A8 interior, from my point of view BMW and Merc do not have such nice interiors and person spends most of his time inside the car, and thats where i want to be really comfortable and impressed the most. i just want that BMW driving dynamics and i think 4.2 TDi can provide that with nice fuel economy
