How much is he asking? What does KBB or similar suggest for that car?
Sounds to me like he ignored the 75k timing belt service interval and paid the price as the belt failed in service and destroyed the original engine. If he's not car savvy, that may account for his statement that a new engine was cheaper than the timing belt service/repair which was in fact repairing the existing engine after a belt failure.
Either way, he's not being completely truthful, and a replacement engine is a very unusual thing for an A8. Ok, it's an 04 with 130k on it so can't expect flawless. But a poorly maintained A8 can turn into a money pit quickly negating any savings made on the purchase.
