Having lived with both versions of these V8s I can say that the bi-turbo rush of the 4.0T V8 goes beyond that of the normally aspirated 4.2 V8, and, by comparison to both the 4.2 and 3.0T, is a torque monster. And in the final analysis, it's all about torque, isn't it? 😈

2013 A8/A8L
3.0T V6 NWB/LWB: HP= 333@5500 Torque= 325 ft lbs @2900 0-60mph= 5.5 sec
4.0T V8 NWB/LWB: HP= 420@5000 Torque= 444 ft lbs @1500 0-60mph= 4.7/4.8 sec

2011/2012 A8/8L
4.2L V8 NWB/LWB: HP= 372@6800 Torque= 328 ft lbs @3500 0-60mph= 5.7/5.8 sec
Car and Driver returned the following:
4.2 FSI - 5.0 seconds to 60mph, 1/4 mile in 13.6 @ 104mph
3.0T - 5.4 seconds to 60mph, 1/4 mile in 13.9 @ 103mph
4.0T - 3.9 seconds to 60mph, 1/4 mile in 12.4 @ 112mph

The seat of my pants, which if I may be so bold to say, is quite well tuned, says the magazines number's feel right, at least for the 3.0 and 4.2, I haven't driven the 4.0 in the normal A8. I know your numbers are straight from Audi, but they seem to sell themselves short for the V8 cars, although I'm not sure why.

Great discussion, thanks for all the input guys. I've worked a deal on a 2012 A8 L with just 31,000 miles on it and overly loaded up - rear comfort and video, pano sunroofs. Driver assistance pkg, winter pkg, double lane glass, super headliner, etc. Oolong grey with grey interior. Sent it to our local German auto specialist for a pre purchase inspection today and passed with flying colors... So excited to be joining you guys!

Audi is always conservative on these specs, but I use them for relative variance comparisons between the engine trim levels. I think the big point is where you get peak torque, and the A8's 4.0T V8 produces it more quickly, lower on the rpm curve, compared to the 3.0 V6 and 4.2 V8. And yes, I can tell you that the 4.0T is a rocket when opened up...I haven't done any 0 to 60 runs, but I can tell you that 3.9 seconds wouldn't surprise me at all on this particular 4600+ lb. car, based on the 60 to 90 mph passing runs I've had to perform. The 4.2 is indeed fast, but the 4.0 is sick fast...The 3.9 seconds would be a most definite for the S8 or S8 Plus.

That sounds excellent. If I may ask, what is this car replacing?

Hey buddy, found out that you can actually have the dealer change the hardware for free. You're suppose to have 3G. I just dropped off my 13' A8 this morning. The part takes a week for them to get it since it's tied in to your VIN. Check with your Audi dealer.

Nothing. They run your VIN and it should tell you that your car needs it. It's not a recall so they didn't tell anyone. It's this thing with T-Mobile changing their cell towers causing your car to not pick up the correct signal so only certain vehicle were effected.
