Is my TCM bad ?????????
Ok I have a 2001 A8 140,000 miles the transmission went into limp mode, I think .the fluid level is ok, when you put it in reverse it will just bearly move all the forward gears are working fine so I unplugged the TCM and it backs up fine but starts out in drive no other gears are working... I had a Passat that did that and the tcm had gotten wet I pulled this one out and don't see any signs of water ... Any ideas ???

1. Go to D2 board (2001=D2; D4 = 2011+) 2. Go to house of prayer
D4's are current model A8's being sold new. You are two generations back on all of motor, tranny and control electronics. Unfortunately from having owned its 4.2 cousin, the A6 4.2, in plain English the ZF 5 speed used in that generation was basically a lemon. I only got to 100K before mine blew up, and 140K honestly is long.
Search the D2 board and you will find lots of info. Once upon a time anyway TozoM8 was the definitive guru on those; also rebuilt them in the Chicago area. Fixes are commonly full rebuilds, though once in a while you find something else. FWIW, I happen to still remember there was a TSB for faulty shift position sensors on the tranny. A pain in the butt to get at/out physically and a fairly expensive part, but at least it is on the outside of the tranny case. You can also physically unplug the main connector (a big round one underneath plus whatever else connects to that position sensor) and spray it clean with a contact solvent, check for corrosion, etc. The position sensor is fairly high up on the tranny case on the drivers (left) side as I recall, is fairly flat to the tranny case and several inches high and wide, with a bunch of wires clearly coming out of it. Besides the main tranny control connector lower down by the pan, its the only thing on the tranny electrically that involves more than a single wire or two.
As Kris said, you want a scan too, especially for anything that may involve electrical. Honestly, pray it is there rather than internal with the clutches or even valve body/solenoids.
