Inner Tie-Rod Removal
I just purchased a 98 A6 Avant and went to get it aligned and the shop says the tie rods need to be replaced. I have no issues doing the outer tie rods, but have a question about the inners. Are they the same as the 97 a6's? How do you remove them?
Thanks for the help!

Your '98 A6 Avant is same as a '97 A6 Avant, a C4 platform with the 2.8L V6 12V. Usually, the outer tie rods are the only part that wears out and needs replacement.

Thanks A6Gary, thats what I was hoping.
Yeah, I already replaced the tie rod ends, but the alignment shop said that the inners were seized up and couldn't be adjusted.
I have searched and can't find a write up or any info on replacing the inner tie rods. Any help would be great.

Well, ordered the inner and out tie rod assemblies and replaced them last night. Took about 2hours to do. Was pretty straight forward, just 3 bolts under the throttle body housing (big black plastic piece that says v6)... Removed old ones, which were seized up and replaced with the new ones. Got alignment done this morning and all is well now.

The alignment was off and when I took it in, the shop said that the nut they use to adjust the tie rods was seized, they didn't know if was on the inner or outer portion. I removed the one side outer tie rod end and it was moving freely but the inner tie rod was seized up. So I replaced them both and when I removed both tie rods they wouldnt move at all... car has 178k and I the tie rods looked original.
