BobMar suggests not exceeding 235. might depend on the suspension package you have. also keep in mind that 245/40 will also increase height of tire. so depending on what you're coming from and your suspension, it could start becoming significant. but just guesses from me

I suggested not exceeding 235 because that is widest that is offered OEM. There is clearance for those at least. The 235s are offered on 19 inch rims with either standard or sport suspension. The aspect ratio of the tire in combination with rim size determines height. The 235 indicates width. 235/35 on 19" should be same height as 235/40 on 18". They should also be pretty close in outside circumference otherwise there would be a difference in speed shown on the speedometer.

taller? I'm keeping the profile at 40...would wider tires really make car taller? The A3 will have the sports package that includes sport suspension.

The 40 represents the difference in diameter between the edge of the tire that connects to the rim and the outside edge of the tread. For the same car, bigger diameter wheels will usually be matched with lower aspect ratio tires to get the same height and circumference. Otherwise there could either be wheel well clearance issues or speedometer error. The 225 or 235 represents the width of the tread.
