Perhaps after the first 5k oil change, the numbers will improve?

I've been using Fuelly and after 7 fuel ups and 1500 miles, my average is 21.6 with my best drive to SD on the 5 producing 25.1 and my time on the Angeles Crest Highway screwing around with a Beamer producing 17.

Overall I'd say I do a mix of city and highway in a spirited (I'm a NY/NJ transplant, I'm going somewhere SUPER important) kinda way so I think it lines up with my expectations and I only expect it to get better as I get a better feel for the car, I get the 5k service and my wife starts driving it

I have about 1500 miles on my S3 now. I took a trip today (210.6 miles) and filled up after returning to my home town (6.75 gal.). I was able to average 31.2 mpg of mostly highway driving, so I was very pleased. I have 18" wheels with all season tires.

That sounds encouraging. Good news!

^^^ That doesn't sound possible unless you were driving 55 or 60. I've tried short sections of flat freeway at 70-75 and it never breaks 27, according to the computer at least. Given that using a calculator at fill-ups I've never broken 21 mpg average for a tank, I find 30+ an impossible number for an S3.

I saw up to 30 mpg on the trip computer going and up to 35 mpg returning home. The speed limit on Rt. 50 is 55 mph. I usually go 60 mph. The speed limit on Rt. 97 is 65 mph. I usually go 65-67mph. The speed limit on Rt. 695 is 55. I usually go 60 mph. I usually stay out of the left lane so I don't get run over.

Also, unless I intend to "wind her up" I accelerate gently and stay out of the turbo. I am not racing. It does require self discipline.

By the way, my car is an S3.

If I go anything over 72mpg this drops me down to 24-27mpg. Its strange that such a small increase in mph makes such a HUGE difference in mpg. I've done this on numerous fill ups just make sure this was correct, and drive the same exact commute each morning/night and its pretty consistent.

So if you can stay and manage to be in comfort mode and stay under 70 on the highway (very difficult) you should see a better gain in mpg. The figures above are for the A3, however S3 owners should see roughly a 24-27mpg highway I'm assuming.
So true. I've been seeing the same thing in my 2012 A6 2.0T FWD CVT (weight 3,726 lb). I make frequent 170 mile trips on I-95 between West Palm Beach and Orlando. I have tracked every fill up over 28,000 miles on fuelly.com which you can see in my sig. Before I used to set the cruise on 75 mph and would only get around 30-31 mpg. This month I have been setting the cruise to 70-72 mph, and the past two tanks I got 35 and 33 mpg! Plus there's less wind and road noise at 70 mph so the A6 is very serene and comfortable for the 2 h 45 min trip.

I usually get low 30s mpg on the freeway at 70 mph using cruise control no elevation gain.
At 60 mph I would be getting around 35 mpg.
I think mpg could improve a bit at 5K miles; I am at 2400 miles.
In town I shift quickly and a little above 2K rpm. S3 has max torque starting at 1900 rpm and use it to keep rpm low and save gas. Also I anticipate stopping by coasting. I do my occasional romp to pass slow drivers and show off the car. 5 launch controls done so far.
May be the 18' tires help too?

I thought the 8 speed Tiptronic is better for mpg.

With both my 2008 A3 and my 2011 S4, I noticed about a 5mpg gradual improvement as I put the first 5K on the car without any different driving behaviors, so I imagine the same will hold true here...
