Default Surprise increase in MPGs on S3

So if you've read my posts, you'll know that I am, at best, bitter about the disparity between the sticker MPGs versus reality.

To sum-up, I've been getting about 10-13 in the City and 21-24 on the Highway no better than 19-20 overall (mixed driving). I get gas at the same gas station, I have not really altered my driving style (too much) since I bought the car. I drive in 'manual' 95% of the time and throttle is set to dynamic, along with steering and suspension. I run air of 41 front and 39 rear and I have 91 oct (my ONLY choice in freakin' CA). I almost never have passengers.

I am now at 6500 miles and the gas mileage on the last two tanks has jumped to 23 mpg over all. I ran a highway-only drive yesterday and saw 26 mpg for the whole trip.

These number are encouraging, hopefully I'll see even more increases this coming year.

Now, you might thinking, 'Dude… 0-60 in 4.4 and you're worried about MPGs?'

Yes, yes I am.

For sure the mileage will improve as it becomes fully broken in.

I am sure that you are aware that if you drive an S3 like an S3 was made to be driven it will not give you the mileage reported for the EPA test cycle. It may not even be possible where you live to drive in a manner that duplicates the EPA test cycle. If you're forced to do stop and go driving a high percentage of the time, bad gas mileage will be the outcome.

If you want to see a really big almost astounding difference in mileage go find a fairly deserted flat place with little traffic, shift into D and drive at a constant 45 mph non-stop for a tankful. You probably won't do this but you get the point. If you want fuel economy you have to drive for fuel economy. That starts with putting the car in "D" and never accelerating fast. You probably know the rest of the drill. Just a few high performance starts on every trip can turn 30 mpg into 15.

It's a shame because it just ruins all the fun....

^^^ Yeah, I drove to LA from SF last month, plenty of flat, got to try 60, 70, 80, 90 and even… eh hem, well, more.

The most DRAMATIC difference was between 60 and 70 with a fast decline to the eh hem speeds.

Yeah, quite familiar with not only MPGs comparos but also Audis. And if you've read my posts, you'll see that I am quite a whiner about this topic on this car.

Default 20.6 after 4k miles

I've been tracking on Fuelly since I got the car. Now at just over 4k so haven't had the 5k service yet. A mix of highway and city, but they are in LA so sometimes it's more of a mix of parking lot and city. Overall, I'm pleased with the MPG considering how I drive it, just not with the recent spike in gas here in SoCal

Not a surprise. The first couple of tanks of a brand new car will burn very fast until the engine breaks in a little.

I didn't buy a performance sports sedan that requires 93 octane gas to spend too much time worrying about the MPGs. However, I am not familiar with too many cars other than the S3 and BMW m235 that deliver this kind of performance and luxury with this level of MPGs.

I have about 4000. I meticulously track my mileage and am averaging 23.5 roughly. I drive in "D" but love to go to "S" and slam it once in awhile. I think driving with the paddle shifters is possibly less efficient.
