Default 2017 S5

Planning to trade my 6MT 2013 S5 at 4 year warranty period in September (it's been a great car with no real issues after 35000 - except for a headlight!). My dealer indicated this week that re-designed 2017 S5 will likely be out August/September. Would like to know if anyone has better intel - can't say my dealer has the best insight. Also have read that Audi will offer an MT...even thought the 2017 S4 hasn't offered it - but from what I've read recently, it will be available by the summer on the S4.

Here is an article from Car and Driver magazine about the new 2017 Audi S4 which is coming out soon. Whatever will be offered in the B9 S4 will be almost the same for the B9 S5.

As for the manual tranny, the article says to not hold your breath on it. Various car manufacturers have been dropping manual trannys from their cars. Audi did the same for the R8.

This article on the 2017 Audi S4 from TopSpeed.com says no manual tranny. So, the likelihood of the B9 S5 having a manual tranny is nil.

From what I understand, and what has already been released for the S4, the '17 S5 will go a totally different direction with the drivetrain. Instead of the Supercharged V6 and 7-Speed DSG tranny (which IMO is perfect) it will move to a Turbo V6 and an 8-Speed Tiptronic. Most on the forum have been less impressed with the Tiptronic than with the DSG. It seems the car may be lighter, so it may be more tossable. That's all I know.

The interior is also totally different, since I assume it will be similar to the new A4/S4. I'm not loving what I've seen, so my plan is to get one of the last '15 or '16 S5 Cabs before the model changes.

Default With the Cabriolet's, you may have more time...

… The cabriolet's have lagged at least a year. My 2009 A4 Cabriolet was still a B7, while coupes and sedans were all the B8 chassis.

Happy Motoring

If you mean my sounding biased towards DSG, I have absolutely no issues with manual trannys. I used to drive manual in the past until city traffic got worse and I started changing clutch hydraulic cylinders a lot often. Just saying what the articles I have read have mentioned about manual trannys being most likely no longer available.

Cheers! :-)

A month or two ago Road&Track article indicated that the S4 would have an MT by this summer....so not too sure that new S5 will not follow suit. Wish to hell that I could find out...still prefer MT to paddles...trouble is that very few cars in the price range of the S5 have MT...except for BMW...and the current new 340i with new aluminum engine is a sedan...not yet in the 435 (which would make it a 440) coupe until probably 2017. I need 4 wheel drive since I live in snow country otherwise would move up to an M4. BTW, the 340i - my wife just took delivery last month with MT is faster than my S5.....not even close...sorry to say. Very impressive.

The car is unlike previous M cars, locking rear diff is fine. The real problem is ground clearance; X-drive wouldn't really help with high centering on packed snow. I use 245-40/17 tires all four corners vice the OEM 255/40/18 rears and 225/45/18 fronts.

The thing is, I had 225/55/17 snow tires on for 11 years and the tires were squirmy from the beginning, tall sidewalls, etc., and after 11 years they still had about 6/32" tread but had hardened…the traction control was always hitting on normal acceleration…tough on rear brake pads! The new tires, Michelin X-Ice (III?) are great in snow and quite a bit better on cold dry pavement.

The (long-winded) point is that the M4 works as well on snow as the X-drive with all season tires…it's all about the clearance.

I have read the auto trans in the C7 Corvette shifts quicker than the Audi DSG, so maybe a new 8-speed AT not such as bad thing?

Thanks. Good point. We love our S5 Coupe and have loved our previous S5 Cabs. We definitely want to go that route rather than the B9. Perfectly happy with the current interior and exterior. Still wows us.
