Car failed 1st test. Results being sent to Audi. Waiting on reply. Dealer said more than likely will get new pistons and rings.

good info and thanks for keeping us updated

- I just had the oil changed (MY 2010) at an Audi dealer and wanted them to do an oil consumption test but they said to bring it back when it shows low oil..? I'm sure they topped it off with as much as they could put in.

to ensure they didn't overfill it. Not that you would use an oil sucker to lower the oil level below full….

Got car back yesterday.. New pistons and rings. Drove 115 miles and used 1/3 quart of oil. Went to dealer this morning they said it's because the engine was dry after rebuild. They topped it of with oil and said it should be fine now......we'll see!

Default rings may not seat without break in oil.

Using synthetic from the beginning with an aftermarket ring and piston job can be problematic.

At the factory the cylinder size and crosshatch and piston and ring specs are much more tightly controlled than the dealer…if the cylinders were glazed or the original piston/ring combination poorly seated for whatever reason, the rings may take awhile to seat, if ever, using synthetic oils.

All this is conventional wisdom, of course, but using a good synthetic break in oil such as amsoil break in oil will generally help. For amsoil, the break in oil is kept no longer than 1000 miles. You can gauge the break in by measuring leak down or vizing the exhaust ports (complicated to view exhaust ports of course) during the break in period. From your perspective as long as the oil usage drops quickly, I'd say within 500 miles, you're probably ok.

AMSOIL Break-In Oil (SAE 30)

There are other break in oils of course, YMMV as they say.

Any news on this? Did the fix work?

Also, does this oil consumption problem only occur for 2011 and older cars? i.e. - has it been fixed for 2012+ cars?

So far so good. 1500 miles and no oil use. As far as I know problem was only with 2009-2011 models.
