Default S5 or older RS5 cab?

I really like the look of the RS5 and can get a 2014 4.2cc for the same money as the 2015 3.0cc S5 cab, is it really that much better?

Why don't you drive both and decide for yourself? I'm not a big fan of a coupe turned cab. It adds a ton of weight to make up for the lost rigidity, so the RS5 cab IMO loses a lot of what the coupe offers, but listening to that sweet sound of the V8 with the roof down can't be beat.

Default All depends on the deal. I'd do the RS5.

BUT get the extended warranty for as long as you plan to keep the car.
RS5 repairs ain't cheap.
Your worst problem will be carbon buildup due to direct injection…google the problem and make sure your warranty/maintenance agreement covers it. The dealer will resist that particular issue if not pooh-pooh it.

And BTW, if you can get a 2015 S5 convertible for same price, that's a helluva deal since a used RS5 convertible good deal is about $64K with 20K miles and a new S5 convertible goes from $67K to +$72K MSRP and there isn't much leeway from MSRP to dealer cost.

Default having owned S5's and an RS5...

… we have also owned a an A4 Cabriolet. I was very favorably impressed on an extended test drive of an RS5 Cabriolet as the body was way stiff and didn't shudder - even over angled railroad tracks and speed bumps. However, if I was to get another cabriolet, it would definitely be the S5 as it is lighter and generally more agreeable car to drive. Thanks to the supercharger, the power is available at lower revs that befits a drop top. Don't get wrong, I love my RS5 as a coupe as it is a great car to sling through the mountains, but I want the roof over my head if things get ugly.

The S5 is a wonderful car, and in my opinion, better balanced. My dream car is an S5-R package, with the big brakes, sport exhaust and stiffer suspension of an RS5, but keep the 3.0 liter V6. I can build that easy enough, but I want the factory warrantee.

Happy Motoring

Eric

Default Arguably, the S5 supercharged is way more tunable.

The 4.2 has always been not much more for a lot more money. The S5 with a change in supercharger pulleys, fueling map, perhaps injectors, throttle body, and bigger intercooler should get around 450-500 hp. (I use 2hp/L for blown engines, but this isn't a turbo and it costs 80-100hp for the supercharger). And then your real problems start with the clutch, etc.

I just like the stock RS5 V8...

I had '10 and '11 S5 Cabs and both were great cars and fun to drive. Both had the Sport Differential. Lots of torque and great exhaust sound (although not as good as the V-8) with the top down.
