Default Cost was my motivator...

I use it to tow a small utility trailer - probably never more than 1000-1200 lbs. And use it for holidays with a "hitch-haul", usually for bulky but light items.

Thanks for sharing your hitch findings. I wonder if there would be any economy if we got together to order the Westfalia Euro hitches together?

I may look at fabricating my own otherwise, I like the receiver pointing down, but I would make it for a class three drawbar...

My trailer doesn't weigh more than 1200lbs either. But I can't bring myself to get that hitch when the OEM style solution is much better in terms of mounting and being hidden.

Probably, there was a group buy for them last year but I can't seem to find who organized it or where they came from. I will ask my current contact for them if he could do any sort of group buy pricing, mostly to save on shipping since it is very expensive.

I have to agree - the OEM hitch is better (just not 8 times better in my opinion). I've usually preferred OEM solutions, but I've always found Audi deficient in this area. I mean, why is there a 13-pin european plug on a US market car??? I compare it to my Dad's experience with his Subaru - the factory hitch was less than $150 (wiring included), and bolted up in less than 15 mins.

Also, I've always wondered with the OEM/European style hitch - how would you mount a bike carrier or hitch haul?

Almost makes me want to trade the allroad in for an EcoBoost Flex...

Just a mention on towing capacity. I have an OEM hitch that I bought in 2003. (I know that isn't a help to those that didn't get one.) I routinely pull a 14' dual axle flat bed trailer which totals up to almost 3000lbs. (trailer is 1400, race car is 1500). I have, in an emergency, put a 3000lb car on same trailer and hauled it home (3000' elevation change over 20 miles, 50 mile total trip). Did it without complaint. This was with stock drivetrain and note that mine is a 6sp not a slush. So I have no issue with this car pulling loads.

fj..

Good discussion here, I should be looking more into this next week, I have the same complaint mentioned by another respondant, How do you carry bikes on the euro hitch...admittedly half the reason why I want the hitch.

I also need to move my kubota from time to time...So I'm looking for the Euro tow rating of 4950 pounds...The trailer has breaks so I'm confitent in the AR's ability to get the job done.

I'll keep you all posted on my hitch fabrication... anyone else interested?

This is part of what I wanted to fab...only in a class 3 size with 2" receiver.

My question is, the euro hitch has a round vertical receiver - Right???
