Need advice on Synthetic oil... (Finmann I need you!!!!)
O.K. I've decided I will be using synthetic oil, so let's not start a thread trying to talk me out of it (we've already done that)... 8-)
My new problem is finding 0W30 - stopped at 2 places and neither had it. The closest I found was 5W30. My question(s) now are:
1.) Is 5W30 O.K.?
2.) Where can I locate 0W30? (If it is recommended more?)
3.) What about 5W40? - See comments below.
I also found Valvoline 5W40. On the back of the bottle it stated it was compatible for turbo-charged engines and met Porsche, VW, BMW, RR & Bentley specifications... I figured it would good for Audi as well. However the " counter guy" said if I was told to stick with 30 I should not get the 40... Note: the Valvoline 5W40 was the only synthetic that mentioned turbo's or Porsche/VW...
Expert advice would be much appreciated! Thanks! 8-)

You might want to call around first. Might save some time driving around.
But hey, anytime driving the allroad is not totally wasted. :-0
It was strange to find that some Checker locations carried it and others didn't. I'm sure there are some other part stores in your area that carries it. NAPA perhaps? Best of luck!

I use M1 5W30...but of course, I don't have turbos...
If you can find 0W30 (Wal-Mart (YUK) has been cited most frequently as the most likely to have it in stock), I'd use that.
Chances are your dealer uses something other than 0W30 or 5W30, so either way, you are bound to use something better than they would give you...they don't seem to care what the manual says...just who gives them the best price on K-mart used dino oil.
Given the weather in NorCal, I doubt you could have any real problem with either weight...just make sure it is real synthetic, not that fake-o Castrol Syntec stuff...it's Ok, but not real syn.
I'm not a whole lot of help...I got my first 3 cases of 5W30 on the Air Force base, but now they are out (thanks to me) and they are profoundly slow at restocking...and I have an oil change coming in 2-3k!!! I gotta find me some M1!!!

FOUND! Thanks to everyone! 8-)....
I have no idea what I'd do without you!... Perhaps drive a BMW?..... Naaaaaahhhhhh!
I tried Pepboys (in San Jose, CA) about 45min from my home. They carried M1 0W30 so I bought a case - $29.
Strange, it "appears" Mobil is the only synthetic oil maker to sell 0W30. There were plenty of synthetic oil brands to choose from but none offered 0W30 except Mobil - any reason?
Thanks agin guys! 8-)
