Default Another Quattro day in the Sierra's :-)

Warm front was supposed to bring rain in all but >8000ft but instead it got colder, turned into big thick snow, and really dumped hard all over the place beginning around 1PM

Since I80 & 89 were both at a complete standstill, and chain control making it worse - so I got an extra shot in my Latte, took the kids to get ice cream and then set off the path less traveled : Donner Summit / Donner Pass Rd to Sugar Bowl the back way, and back onto 80 at Cisco

Twisty, icy, treacherous, and can't see anything but snow and vertical faces ... what a great ride ;-)

Warm, dry and comfy all the way.

Default We took old 40 on Sunday to bypass the mess on 80...

One of the guys with us had to dig several cars out on that road a few years back. When it really dumps the plows don't travel that road so you can find yourself in a bad spot pretty quickly.

Not sure if it really saves much time but it sure is better than sitting in stop and go traffic.

Default I live on Old 40... Sugar Bowl is now keeping it open more now on thier own dime...

...from Donner Lake South end to the upper gate. However, CHP has to block it off every so often as Semi's and chainless SUVs go up and get stuck. Its no place for a semi in the snow, but tons of fun in an Audi. Lots of old rusted skeletons of cars and buses in the rocks below.

Default 80 was not stop & go - it was completely stopped

Somehow the risk seemed better than 8hr trip to San jose
