Default Fuel Economy While Towing?

Not sure if this has really been discussed on this forum directly but lets post what kind of mileage we get when towing. All #'s should be hand calculated, not what the OBC tells us please.

This past weekend I rented a U-Haul RT trailer (5 x 8 with ramp) A very heavy trailer to pull my BMW S1000RR to the track with. Over 345 miles I used about 15 gallons of diesel for an average consumption of 23mpg.

Previous trips with a similar trailer except two bikes got me roughly 22mpg.

What numbers are you guys seeing when you tow?

My Q5 is a 2014, TDI S-Line.

Wow... 23 mpg while towing is great, IMO. This is what our Q5 gets when not towing anything.

I towed my 5x10 landscape trailer for a round trip of 350 miles or so, loaded with about 2500lbs of stuff in it. My mileage was around 16 MPG. Granted this is with an SQ5 not a TDI.

Note: Speeds were around 70 MPH most of the time, so certainly not fuel efficient speeds.

not to be forum police but that's dangerous man..... you should definitely slow down a bit when towing, especially with that much weight.

Thats what I said too! I would get similar mileage in my 2.0t during regular highway trips.

If the speed limit is 70 then what's the problem? As long as he has enough distance to slow down and feels in control of his vehicle and trailer, I see no issue. I even overtake people if necessary when towing. The TDI has so much passing power I feel like this guy in the video lol

Lol safety+common sense. The SQ5 isn't designed to tow, it's a sports crossover.... plus that trailer had to weigh at least 3100lbs loaded.

I'm not forum police and not telling other people how to drive but FWIW I don't even tow at 70mph in my F150....

15.7 MPG loaded and 18 MPG empty coming back. Yes the speed limit on most of I5 is 70 MPH and that is what the traffic often dictates. The vehicle is a dream to tow with, much better than the F-350 I used to own and tow with. I am going to leave it at that.

Greetings all:

I track my fuel mileage with Fuelly. I tow 1600 miles 2 times a year-down to Florida for the winter and back in the spring. I pull an enclosed 5x8 cargo trailer with electric brakes and it is packed with various items as well as my BMW motorcycle. The truck is also loaded to the t!ts with luggage, 2 adults and 2 dogs. I get 22 mpg towing at 68mph.
