Unfortunately the Farmer's Almanac (don't laugh, they've been spot on the last 7 years) calls for a mild winter. Obviously the summer tires still have to come off but now I'm wondering if the DMV1 waiting for install should've been a wider more dry-friendly tire; I have 235/55-19. But what ya gonna do. I'd probably get hit with a big snow year if I went the other route.

Nokians are hard to get where I live, and replacements can be even harder to find. And our Hakkas were manufactured in Russia, which still bothers me a bit for obvious reasons. Aside from those quibbles, I highly recommend them.

I just bought a pair of R2 SUV on cheap 17" rims for Discounttiredirect. 9mo 0% financing that made my wife happy. Comperable price to the dunlop 4d through Tirerack.

Can't wait to test them out. A few 60f days this week so I'll mount them at thanksgiving weekend after that.

Car & Driver (12 / 2015) has a snow tire comparison and the Nokian R2's did indeed finish first. Here are the other ratings:

2. Michelin X-Ice XI3
3. Continental WinterContact Si
4. Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 (I'm a bit surprised the Blizzak did not perform better)
5. Dunlop Winter Maxx
6. Yokohoma iceGUARD iG52c

How about for 20" SQ5 wheels? I can't find Nokians in that size at discounttire.com. What are people recommending for 20" winter tires? Don't want to do new wheels this year.

For what extra you spend on the larger size tires and remounting tires, you can get cheap wheels. I think you can go as small as 18" ...but maybe only 19 and clear the brakes.

Check out tire rack and look at minus sizing. They'll have something for you.

Nokian makes a Hakka R2 255/45R20 for the SQ5. Mine have been on order for 6 weeks (on the boat from Finland) and are supposed to be here this week.
