Default SQ5 winter wheel package

Since it appears the other SQ5 winter wheel thread vanished, here's another.
Audi SQ5 winter wheel package with 19"x7" version of the stock 20" wheel style with 235/55-19 Continental CrossContact Winter tires.
Wheel part number for anyone interested:

How much space is there between these 19's and the front brake callipers?

I think this was discussed in the other threads, but I am still confused about the advantage of the narrower 7" wheels. I realize narrower is better for snow traction, but this wheel package comes with the same 235/55-19 tire profile that we see on the wider 19x8" stock wheels. If the tread width remains the same (235mm), then what is the advantage of a narrower wheel (7" vs 8")?

Good question. Lower weight is the only thing I can think of... or the ability to go with a narrower tire in the future.

I had the opposite concern when I ordered my winter wheel/tire package from Tire Rack. I stuck with 18" x 8" wheels but went slightly narrower with the tire, from 235 to 225. I was afraid the wheels could be easily damaged against a curb or such but the 225 tires still bulge out further than the outer edge of the wheel.

Not sure there is any advantage of a 7" wide wheel. Maybe a little more rim protection?

The wheel width does have an affect on the tread width. Narrow wheels will pull the tires in to some degree. You'll notice that when a manufacturer publishes tire specs, they typically specify the width of the wheel on which the cross section and other measurements are based.

Default A guess:

Just over 1/2" vertically.

My D3 A8 has 385mm rotors (vs. SQ5 at 380mm) and similarly designed calipers and just barely clears with 18's. So, as a ballpark guess should be about 1/2" (half the diameter change down to 18's), plus a few more mm of clearance. Since the SQ spares are 18", that's another pointer that the clearance should be slightly over 1/2" here too.

Default Little difference as a practical matter

235/55-19's typically spec anything from a 6 1/2" wheel to an 8 1/2" wheel, so either a Audi winter specific 7" or a generic OE Q5 8" are both in the range. Of course the Q5 19 x 8's are pretty easy to find around as take off or used sets.

The 7" will have marginally more "bulge" to the sidewall, which protects the rim a bit more from curbing, but can look a bit "cop carish" if taken to the (lower) limit. What the 7's would do is allow one to push down to much much narrower tire widths like a 195 or a 205. But those won't be the Q5 type fitments up at a 29" diameter; more likely something that might be fit to an A5 where the wheel itself could still cross over.

Default Usable on Q5 as well, or a bad idea?

I'm looking for winter wheels/tires for my 2013 Q5 3.0 right now. The Audi-blessed winter wheels are 17x7 ET37s with 235/65 tires.... but I think they're kinda ugly. The SQ5 wheels are nicer, but are the same 19" diameter as what came with my Q5. Can they be used as winter wheels for a Q5, or is that a bad idea?

Many people here run 19's as their snow tires because they like the look. I personally run 18's which are identical in size to my OEM 18's, but I do that due to cost. I think the only difference between 18/235/60 and 19/235/55 is the 18's will have a 1/2" fatter sidewall and 18" tires are much cheaper.

Default Yes, of course you can run normal Audi wheels as snows

It's done all the time by those who just rotate tires off the rims twice a year; I saw it in Europe a fair amount.

Here with a 235 tire the Audi Q5 "regular" rim is just fine; the narrow rim only has an obvious functional purpose as the tire widths drop to below those seen on Q5s. For example my 1996 A6 quattro came with 195s and used a 7" wide wheel.

As another reply suggested, you can also use the Q5 OE 18's, which are yet cheaper in the used market and also fit a 235 tire and are 8" wide in the OE size.
