TDI mileage concern! Best and Worst...

I also just took my first long trip with the Q5 from the bay area to Anaheim and back. I was on the hwy 5 going 75 - 80 most of the way. I got 561 miles out of my first tank which did include a lot of LA traffic driving as well for an average of 28.9 MPG. My second tank was 95% freeway driving (no LA traffic) at speeds over 75 MPH and I got 35.2 MPG. My total for the entire trip was 26.369 gallons for 805 miles which is an average of 30.5 MPG.
As others have stated, I think you should average your two fill-ups together as either you made a mistake in putting in the numbers or the pump turned off on you on your first fill-up. Your average is 30.3 MPG which is similar to mine.

All, Thanks for your messages. When returning home from my road trip I did fill the tank to full but it was only about half empty... So that is probably the issue. I should have marked it as a partial fill up. Yesterday as the tank was half full I did another partial fill up. I will re-calculate to see what happened.

But if you have half a tank of fuel and pull over and fill it all the way to full, then that's NOT a partial fill-up.
What we were saying above what we thought happened was that you THOUGHT you filled it to full, but in reality you did not because of some pump malfunction or air trapped in the system or some other culprit. So in effect you did a partial fill-up but didn't know it.
FAQ: How do I account for partial fuel-ups?
FAQ: Why do I have to fill the tank all the way up every time I buy fuel?

Perhaps you got a last tank of regular fuel and then fell victim to "winter" fuel which allows for far worse MPG? Not sure if diesel switches on & off the way regular gas does.

Greeting from a FNG,
My wife "let" me drive her new 2015 Q5 TDI on our first long road trip to visit family in Washington State, I thought it would be informative to keep close tabs on fuel consumed and total mileage for the trip.
1548 miles
51.1 gallons used or 30.3 MPG
Driving on Hwy 5 from Northern California over Mt Ashland, through Oregon at 70mph(lots of LEO's) and then to just south of Seattle. We then moseyed out to the Oregon Coast and then south to Medford Oregon. Home to Nor Cal in 50-60mph headwinds, a great and varied test for sure.
7500 miles so far and not one issue, my wife is in love. The Pistachio leather does love to take on a blue hue from denim. though.
