Considering a 2009 Q7 - Bad idea? Any advice?
I've been away from Audi and Audiworld for a while but I am considering buying a 2009 Q7 3.6 with 63k miles. I know that Audi's can be expensive to own but I can do the maintenance work myself. I am more concerned with the big ticket repairs on an out of warranty car. I would appreciate any advice or tips to look out for before buying this car. Also, is $23,900 a fair price? Here is a list of options:
20 Inch Plus Wheels, 3rd Rear Seat, 4WD, BOSE Sound System, Navigation System, Panoramic Sunroof, Parking Sensors, Power Liftgate, Premium Package, Rear Air Conditioning, Rear Sunshade, Rear View Camera, Running Boards, S-Line.

options. typically the 4.2L variants are better equipped.
i have never seen a 3.6 with air suspension, b&o or extended leather and most have the smaller wheels. very few had s-line or even hid headlights.

Don't get a 2009 3.6. For the most part, I've been ok with mine since being covered by factory and CPO warranties...but I've had a lot of problems with it. Funny, because it's currently at the dealer for a dead MMI system - caused by a wet amp - caused by sunroof drain leaks that happened exactly 1 year ago this month.
Wife and I are deciding whether or not we should look at something else. I love the Q7, but wish I just waited for an affordable 2010 or newer model.

It sounds like it is well equipped for a 3.6. We (wife's daily) have an '08 3.6 that is relatively loaded- xenons, tech (lane depart, blind spot, voice control, full keyless etc.), cold weather, 4 zone, 20s, though not an S-Line. I think we have won the reliability lottery with it as we haven't had any significant issues.
The redeeming feature of the 3.6 is slightly better mileage and probably less carbon buildup vs. the 4.2. That said, it is notably slower in performance, but not awful- very similar output numbers on paper to the non-prestige 2015 3.0T, but the current 8 spd makes the base 3.0T perform reasonably well vs. the older (similar output) 3.6 + 6spd tranny. I wouldn't dismiss the 3.6 out of hand, particularly if you have driven it in most normal driving situations and find it acceptable. If you want something that moves more effortlessly, the 4.2 is the way to go.
On price, that doesn't sound out of line, assuming that you have full service history with that, I think you could do a bit better than that.

WOW! all the negative talk about the 2009 3.6. I love our 09 Sline 3.6, there are no regrets with it. It is actually our beach cruiser now. I have never had any issues not even the drain leak issue, its been a great vehicle, i own three audis right now and each one of them are great I am 68K on mine now No warranty on it either, just take care of it and the maintenance.
