CREE LED DRL bulb on my 09 Q7 - DIY
I recently purchased the CREE LED 1156 bulb from deautokey.com to replace the original 7506 bulb
- It comes included with load resistors
- I didn't want to splice in to my wires in case i wanted to go back to the stock bulbs so i bought a few connectors
- I then connected the resistor and a male connector with an extention to the female connector
-- the male will plug in to the original harness and the female will plug in to the bulb socket
- Open the hood and at each end of the rear of the light housing you will see a cover
- Reach in and grab the back of the DRL bulb socket and turn it and it should unlock and come right out
-- Then disconnect the bulb socket from the wire plugs and insert the load resistor in between and plug in the CREE LED bulb
- Then you can put double sided tape on the resistor and tuck it all inside the light housing
I had this setup but found the load resistor was getting hot so I re-did the setup and mounted the load resistor outside the cover
- Then i closed the cover and then used double sided tape on the load resistor and mounted it on the cover
-- This way there is some airflow to cool down the load resistor as the car is in motion.
- Here is the difference but the picture doesn't do it justice
-- left is original bulb, right is CREE LED
- Another picture of both sides with the CREE LED bulb

I had done a similar arrangement on my wife's '08, but what I had found is that the 1156/7506 LED bulb I chose was not built to last, and after researching further, a lot of these LED bulbs are not meant for the continuous use that a DRL application would require- they are meant for momentary signal or back up light use.
It will be interesting to see how many hours you get on yours. I bought a very similar looking bulb that claimed to use all Samsung high output LEDs and really only got about 25-30 hours out of them before some of the LEDs started to fail and ultimately all failed. This was the case with 2 sets (seller replaced first set after failure, but wouldn't replace the 2nd).
Also those load resistors can get up to 350+ F, so you were wise to get them out of the housing, but I'd recommend going a bit further and mounting the resistor to a strip of .030" aluminum sheet. I formed my mounts into an "U" shape and found an empty M6 thread location on the unibody that I was able to bolt the sheet metal mount to.
I still have the mounts in place with the resistors, but took out the LEDs and went to PIAA blue 1156/7506 type incandescents while I find a better LED bulb to try.
Good luck with your setup. It would be interesting to know how long those bulbs last for you - maybe ping back in with an update in a few months.

So I found a daytime running light that doesnt need resistors and doesnt cause a error on the dash.http://www.ebay.com/itm/171389087749?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

One question, have you had them in for a little while now?

Its been three days now, I am going to try to take some pics but I know how it will turn out. I like the way they look in the headlight since there is no "bulb or led" seen its looks like its part of the headlight since its all metal.

lx4life: I bought the same lights for the DRL of my Q7 2008 but I notice that it blinks almost very 30 seconds kind of a sporadic flash. I found that is caused by Bulb Cold Testing but I haven't been able to find the right answer of to fix it. I have found some forums that say that with VCDS I can change the DRL to LED and in others that I can disable the Bulb Cold Testing but in none of them they show up the correct procedure of to achieve this. Do you happen to know how to fix it? Thanks.
