Default radar detector hardwire and a-pillar airbags

Hi,

I am trying to hardwire my V1 by running the power cable under the A-pillar trim - but unlike my earlier A4 this is now an airbag cover. Anyone have any issues with getting the cable under the trim (it's a very tight fit), the trim coming loose, or concerns about interference with the airbag should it deploy ?

Thanks,

David

unrelated but curious how your v1 works with the Q7's side assist features and Adaptive Cruise Control (if you have it).

How are you mounting the detector?

Here is a link to an amazing company with great customer service! I have used these mounts for years.

Audi - Blendmount Radar Detector Mounts

Also check out the mirror tap to power your detector off of the auto dimming mirror.

MirrorTap Power Cord with Inline Fuse ? J28 Design Inc. Online Store

It's a great setup.

@iconoclast, in testing I had no issues from the side assist radar (I don't have adaptive cruise control). My V1 and it's software is 11 years old and with the original factory settings, not sure if the newer versions are more or less prone to interference.

@drober30, thanks for the links.

I don't have a v1, but my escort is hardwired under the a pillar cover and I have zero issues or concerns. Mi MINI and my XC90 were done the same way, and I'm not sure about the Q7, but in my MINI the airbag doesn't fill the entire space under the cover.

in '10 i purchased a new v1 and it interfered with all the gadgets... tech support told me to disable a bunch of features and unfortunately they use those in this area so it rendered it useless... they took back the unit without a penalty. i was asking because i was hoping after being a v1 customer since the 90's they updated their firmware but i guess not. on other vehicles i have used blinder and lidar detectors / jammers without issue but they much more expensive and nearly 3x the cost of a v1 + install.

I remember reading that radar detectors work better when mounted higher. What I have done before is to mount them near the rear view mirror and wire them to the central roof light. The wire is nice and short and the radar detector is nicely out of view (not middle of the windscreen). The detector can be wired to switch on/off with the car too if you splice into the correct wire. No need to mess with the A-pillar either then.

Follow my links in the above post. This offers the setup you describe.

Yeah, I think getting (switched) power from the overhead panel is faster and can't impede the function of the airbags:

I did this on our Q5 last week and it literally takes a few minutes to complete. The process and design is identical to the A4 B8 cars except the ground connection is a bit different.

i have side assist and adaptive cruise. I had to turn off K band, which is fine in California since they are switched over to Ka and Laser. I have my v1 mounted to the right of the mirror.

I had no issue running the hardwire down the a pilar, if you do , just make sure the wire is on the side towards the window and secure it down so it wont interfere with the airbag operation. I chose to run it down the a pilar since i have a remote mute switch on the cruise stalk, and that requires plugging into the hardware adapter aswell.
