Default New S4 - 6MT Rev Matching question

Hi Everyone,

Getting nervous that the new platform would not contain a manual, I recently obtained an S4 6MT. We're a dying breed I guess...

While shifting is not quite as good as the BMW I traded in, it's still pretty nice in itself (don't hate, just being honest). Typically when I drive, I will blip the throttle manually for my downshifts (basically, heel-toe rev matching); however, the S4 does this automatically...just not all the time.

Question is this - how can you predetermine if the car is going to automatically rev match the RPMs? There's no rhyme or reason as to why this goes sometimes and not others...and is starting to drive me a little batty. If nobody knows what the formula is when this kicks in...does anyone know how to turn it off?

Outside of that...it's out with the old (posted in the welcome section).

In with the new...

I haven't had much of a chance to do anything with it yet...but I did put my BMW Halo LED's into the fogs. Passenger side is new - driver's side is stock. Much better now.

I'm sure I'll get some better pics once all this snow breaks.

Cheers,
Joe

On my 3rd B8 S4 with 6MT. Didn't think the S4 has rev matching

The B8.5 does rev match, at least the later MYs. I haven't personally experienced it, but based on what I read, you have to be in Dynamic mode and above 3000 rpm for the rev match to kick in. I could be wrong on the specifics, but it does have to do with where you are in the rev range and how far off you are from the correct rpm. For example if you blip the throttle yourself, it should only auto rev match if you missed the target by too much.

Yeah - this is definitely rev matching.

I'll check what you're stating about the dynamic mode - which this is currently set on for all 3 - and see if what you have listed is correct. I'd hate to pull it out of that mode, but if it turns this off, that may be the way to go.

I'll also check into this 3000 RPM limit you're listing, and see if that is the cutoff point.

I assume by 3000 RPM, that would be > 3000 in the gear you're selecting into once pulled off the clutch, right?

Cheers,
Joe

That's what I would expect. Especially if you shift down multiple gears at once. For Audi this is a way to protect the drivetrain more than anything, so the larger the gap between rpm in current gear and rpm in new gear the more likely it auto rev matches to protect the drivetrain.

In driving some today...it's not a 3000 RPM item, as I had several instances ending over 3000 that did not kick in. I question if it's under 30 or 35 mph that it does this...as that seems to be mostly when it happens.

It did blip on me going into 1st in comfort mode...but could only get it to occur once. Leads me to believe it's not defeatable.

Still trying to figure it out though....
