same reason you see guys with those stuck up chicks, its worth the torment, yeah youll need a few grand on the side for inevitable problems but its such a great platform that alows you to do what you want from mild to wild all that limits is your pocket

if you find one in good shape and keep up with it i dont think the upkeep is all that bad. considering the exhilarating drive, i think theyre worth every penny and every spin of the wrench

yes. I owned one for 8.5 years, great car! I had no major problems at all, however some people had lots of problems. If you are getting one, look for one that has had only one or two owners, particulary forum enthusiasts. Have it checked out by a Indy shop prior to sale.

Consider a scenario like in this post happening to you.

If you're willing to endure the upkeep it is a very enjoyable car to drive.

I bought my B5 S4 about 5 months ago. I keep getting problem upon problem. I don't really regret it though, I just see these problems as obstacles on my way to a dream car. I think the 'trouble' is more or less the pain of owning a German car, because parts and labor are always more than say, an American auto. I wouldn't blame the model generation.

Like someone mentioned above, this car is a great platform for upgrades, which is why I bought mine. There are no cars out there that you can buy in the price range of the B5 S4 that can reach such great levels of power with such small investments.. A chip alone adds a staggering 100+ ft lbs of torque! For those cars that can get similar power for the same price or even less, like maybe a 300ZX, they don't have nearly the level of luxury and sophistication as the S4.

I've had my S4 for 5 years, hardly any issues with it, been a fairly reliable car.

I've loved it since I brought it home.

Now that its Stage3+, I think I love it even more. Comfortable, classly looking car, that you're not ashamed to pick up your date, or your mother in, and will tear 95% of the cars on the road a new A-hole? Yes please!

Bought mine a couple of months ago. Haven't had any serious issues. She's in the shop right now getting $3k of preventative maintenance (timing service, tranny mounts, head gasket, etc) and an exhaust. I'm still an Audi newb, but it seems to me that these cars are not for the faint of wallet. But if you can afford to keep them up, they are well worth the hassle for a very fun driving experience.

***BE PATIENT***

I wanted a very specific S4: Black/Black, 6- speed, low mileage, box stock single owner and clean. Everyone told me that it would be very hard to find. But I waited and searched and found her. Picked her up that same week for $9,600.

Good luck.
