Streaming is a buzzword with no meaning. Don't believe the hype.
You can stream ANY data. Mpeg. QT. WAV. mp3. Its all a bunch of BS and you just fell for it.
Real and MS just like "streaming" because to them "streaming" means "no save as..."
And as far as quality goes, DivX;-) is FAR better than anything MS has come out with.
I mind quicktimes because I have no way of converting them to anything else, since the audio stream is usually encoded. How moronic is that?

enlighten me, pal....how can you stream an mpeg and get .asf type quality and compression?
Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Obviously not...
Sure, you can stream MPEG...(Satellite)....but we are talking bandwidth considerations here, nynet....and multicasting...
jeez...

I don't give a rats *** about the low bitrate crap..
... its all garbage. Just like MP3Pro.
DSS/DirectTV use mpeg4.
NTT (Japan) is currently experimenting with motion jpeg via gig ethernet (and yes, multicasting too, both IP and their own proprietary protocol). The format of the digital stream itself is IRRELEVANT to multicasting. Its all bits.
mpeg is as much a stream as asf, only without all the crappy drm junk, closed protocols, and patent encumberances. In other words, asf == useless to real developers.
asf and real are just attempts by two _corporations_ to grab marketshare (and your money) by misinforming consumers (as usual). They don't care about superior technology.. they care about their profits.
Think HDTV and greater bitrates, not this 56k-300k bitstream garbage.
