Sometimes the car might not recognize the key. You'll get a message on the VC asking you to put the key on that spot and then it'll re-pair.

Either of those scenarios could be correct. My S5 had an actual slot in the dash where you could stick the key if the battery was going dead. So does our G37. No complaints, though. It's easier just to lay the key on the pad.

Yeah the last a4 I had a b8 had the slot. I know on newer Benzes you remove the button and the slot is under. On my f30 bmw the key spot is right under the start button. Was interesting seeing it all the way in the center console kinda not so intuitive

My dealer salesman said the same thing when I got my car.

RTFM!

Owners Manual - Page 82
Starting the engine when there is a malfunction. This will answer your question.

No. The back of the key fob needs to be placed touching the area noted in the picture then foot on the brake and push the start button to start the car.

Default Prolly works using RFID

For those wondering how it can detect the key if its dead, its likely using passive RFID. Simply put the spot where you place the key generates waves at a particular frequency that the key uses as a source of energy so it can respond.

My educated guess is the key uses active RFID when the battery has power and uses passive RDID when the battery is dead. I can think of more details probably implemented for security purposes but thats the jist.
