A8 or A8L?

Move your front seats to the extreme rear position with seatback angle in a normal position for the person in the front seat. Is there still at least 40 cm between the seat backside and the rear seat pad? If so, you have an L. If not, you don't

Or, just in case someone modded the badges and you want another easy visual like looking at car ad pics: on back doors if you have an extra openable storage cubby up high near the hinge edge, it's an L. The long and the short of the A8 is all in the back doors and rear legroom with that approx 5" stretch.

Another "seemed like a good idea at the time" concept by Audi, usually followed by Piech or other Audi Geschaeftsfueher saying on their next one, "this time we really got it right". Was on what retroactively sort of got called the D1, which was a V8 stuffed into the C4 (?) steel body 100/A6; also with the first generation of then also gawd awful complicated valve body tranny stuff. In plain English, goofball concept where the caliper went on the inside of the rotor so you could fit a bigger rotor under a given size rim. Nightmare on costs, how to have stable rotor surface, heat build up, rotor equivalent weight and so on. And, on D3 whether one realizes or not, calipers are carefully shaped to minimize how far off the rotor they come. Why on a D3 you can fit about an inch smaller wheel than most anything typical of the era--like an 18" factory on the S8's and W12's even at 385mm. Thus way simpler change obviated the Rube Goldberg Germanic stereotype think after some years. Meantime, kits got created and sold to replace the Goldberg contraption known disdainfully as UFO's. Look for the flying saucer in the picture and then you get it!

Mister Bally and I go back to overlapping cut your teeth and knuckles experience on (at least) the C3, so figure he knows some of the lore too.
