Wow those wheels are awesome. 4 x 100, I'm assuming. I don't think BBS makes a three piece in 4 x 108??? Nice windshield seal by the way too.

Default 1.6 litre turbo engine...

Nominal power is 51 kW or 70 HP at 4500 rpm. Maximum torque is 133 Nm at 2600 rpm. The engine displacement of 1588 cc results from a bore of 76.5 and a stroke of 86.4 mm. The compression ratio is 23:1.

Those are the stock configuration specs. A custom hi-flo exhaust and K&N helps to breath a little better and pump up the output and economy even more.
I cruise at 65 MPH and yeild 45-ish MPG on average.

Listed as a VAG 089 `E mode' automatic, it has the curious design feature of coasting when there is no load on the engine. It is a normal three-speed automatic tranny in every respect, except it has an added `E' on the gear selector.

This was designed as yet another `E'conomy-minded feature. The short-lived production run of these trannys was focused in the mid 80's when OPEC was flexing its muscles and the flow of fuel was slowing.

It is an unnerving experience to be gliding along with the cruise control set, some tunes up and enjoying the wilderness scenery when suddenly the RPMs drop to idle levels, the engine disengages and you continue to coast along until the car senses a hill or a decrease in speed.

Sensing the added load - everything returns to normal operating conditions in a split second. Personally, I don't like it. I like to feel her engine and have the added control of all her torque at my command. So we cruise in `D'.

I love the car! It is absolutly unique and draws a crowd when they hear the clatter of the old school diesel. The turbo whine is also easy to hear and turns the heads of moose and deer on the road and they freeze in place. So it has other redeeming qualities.
