2000 Audi TT FWD First Car (Help Please!)
Hey my name is Nick and I am new to the audi community. My first car is a 2000 Audi TT fwd which my uncle bought new in 99'. 80k on the clock, no spoiler, very early car vin 844. Recently went over some suspension work and timing belt service at a local audi vw porsche mechanic nearby called Eurotech Motorsport in Northern Jersey.
I am hoping someone can help me diagnose some issues since the folks at Eurotech said it seemed to run okay. The car has some pickup issues. I know the 180hp models aren't notorious for their speed but this thing is a dog. I can hear the turbo spooling up but after around 3,000 RPM there is no noticeable increase in torque. I have been in stock 180hp 1.8T before and I know how they should feel. The first minute or so the car has great pickup and I can feel how the car is supposed to perform. The baby turbo kicks in and you get a little torque increase- pretty peppy. After a minute of driving, the normal spot where that ''Powerban'' seems non existent. Its like the ecu is shutting down power at higher RPM's since getting onto the highway at a standstill takes longer as usual. My first guess is because the check engine light is now on due to faulty catalytic. My second guess is the vacuum leak coming from what seems to be the intake in the front of the engine (infront of the 5v turbo cover) which leads to a valve in the back of the engine. Third guess would be a slight oil leak around the turbo. Maybe causing the turbo to get excessively hot once engine temp increases?? The car has original spark plugs which I am replacing this week. I have no idea... but you guys know much more than I do and I appreciate any help I can get. Cheers, Nick.

Yeah, spark plugs are way overdue for replacement. Regarding the turbo, the 2000 and 2001 models were notorious for the turbo bypass valve failing. Worth replacing with a tuned version in any event. I don't think the turbo bypass failure generates a CEL.
I've owned two 180s and I never had a problem keeping up with, or pulling away from, my 225 brethren on spirited drives like TT West, so the 180 is no slouch.
