Default A/C Evaporator failure

The evaporator in my 2001 quattro has failed and needs to be replaced. Local mechanic says the amount of work to replace it is monumental requiring the complete removal of the dash and related parts. Says he won't even attempt it.
ECS Tuning has the parts available for less than he had quoted me from Audi. I am generally handy in fixing my cars and would like some feedback. Help anyone? If not able to fix car will become a cold weather only driver.

Anything man builds can be taken apart and put back together. Are you going to let plastic, steel and aluminum get the best of you?

Arm yourself with a Bentley service manual and replace the evaporator.

As far as parts go, while ECS is a great source, If the part they are selling is not from the OE vendor to Audi, I'd buy the correct part from a dealer. But that's just me.
