40 less horsepower, different cylinder head, exhaust manifold, turbo size is smaller. Exhaust system is different. Only one exhaust pipe & cutout at the rear of the car.
Quattro not standard, only front wheel drive with the 185 hp engine. Only a 5 speed manual available, not a six-speed. Automatic transmission is available though.

If you mean how do you tell by looking at a TT? The 180 has a single tail pipe. The tranny is 5 speed manual or automatic. The 6 cylinder 3.2 TT also had an automatic tranny but has 2 tail pipes.
If you mean internals, the 225 has a different turbo and beefier piston-related hardware. If you do a search on this forum, there was an excellent write-up on the internals differences.
Also, for more information about the Mk 1 model differences, read this FAQ.Fourtitude.com - Audi TT FAQ

Let's us know how you do that without the correct cylinde.... everything I mentioned in the above post. You kinda got your tit in a wringer. Buy a used 225 hp engine and sell the 185 you bought.

I agree with you that buying a 180 engine to convert to a 225 is a poor decision. Better off just tuning the 180 with a chip, DD, etc.

Buy the correct engine is my suggestion. Then again, what do I know?

I'm with Mister Bally. Bad idea to down grade. There are other issues with the drive train. Besides you will de-value your car. When you get the car on the rack you will see many differences.
