Default 5W-30 or 5W-40?

So was wondering, here in SoCal, what works best? 5W-30 or 5W-40? I suppose our winters are a bit call, but not sure if cold enough to change oil viscosity? I feel like my car doesn't warm up as fast as it should, or at least compared to my previous MK1 TT.

I know it's advised that I go Castrol 5W-30 or 40, but wanted some experienced feedback.

I have a 2008 Audi TT, 2.0 (Automatic). Thanks

Phil, if you wish to follow the engine mfr's recommendation, they call for an oil meeting the VAG 502.00 spec in the USA. Within that spec there is a "thickness" criteria. So, to make it super-simple, any oil with 502.00 spec on the label meets this thickness criteria. These oils tend to be heavier compared to what other mfrs are recommending today.

I believe the most common oil is Mobil 1 0W40 found at W*mrt for $24/5 qt.

The Owner's Manual will quote "5W40" as the preferred viscosity. A common oil would be Castrol's 5W40. Just ensure it shows "502.00" on the label. I think they've got some new variations.

Phil, welcome aboard!

Thanks for the response and welcome! Yeah, the Castrol 5W-40 says it meets 502.00, but I was just curious if anything else was tried, like the 5W-30 in colder weather

I have always used Mobil 1 or Castrol 5-30 full synthetic for my '08 3.2 V6. In PA, summers are warm with hot days and winters vary with temps from 30's and 40's to around 0-10 (like last winter). If you put 0-40 or 5-40 instead, I'm sure you'll be fine. Love my '08 3.2.

Phil, these oils are all-season/all-climate. They've really done everything they could to simplify for us.

Castrol does offer a 0W30 that meets 502.00. You could also consider the newer VAG oils: 504/507. They are ALL 5w30 should that put your mind at ease for those frigid temps in Los Angeles.
