Default Temp gauge problem

I have a 2008 TT and my temp gauge isn't working properly. Initially it was not working at all (at 0) then check engine light came on. I kept driving and it suddenly began working (after a few engine cool/hot cycles) and check engine light turned off.

Since then in the past few days this has happened a few additional times.

The temp gauge doesn't work then works then doesnt work...

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I have an appt scheduled at dealer but am trying to avoid and fix myself if possible.

Thanks!

Did you ever get this problem fixed? My wife's car is having the same trouble. I replaced the temp sensor and that didn't do it.

Our's still isn't fixed. Hopefully the check engine light fault will not cause an emissions test fail. I'm guessing it is electrical. We already had to replace a tail light assembly due to corroded connections.

The problem was a faulty coolant thermostat and sensor. Replacement of both cost $770 at the Audi dealership. Have not had problems in the 3 mos since fix.

You wouldn't happen to have part numbers available for what they replaced, would you? I already replaced one sensor to no avail. The engine light did cause us to fail emissions, but we found a work around. A bad thermostat sounds more troubling than just a wonky temp sender.
