Default Oil change- Drain or suck it out

What are list members feelings on using a suction device to remove oil?
My gearhead friend is getting one for his GTI.
I have to say that it would be a lot less messy, but wonder if it will pick up any of the heavy/settled debris?-Not that using the drain plug would necessarily eliminate that problem.

I plan on vacuuming when I do the interim 10k change myself.

Default After nearly 300 DIY oil changes...

… I now base the approach on the "hassle factor". On my RS5/S4 - I use the extractor method. On our SUV's that have easy access to the drain plug - I use the gravity method. My analyses that I have done from Blackstone Labs on the the extracted oil don't show any unusual buildup of sludge.

Of course, dry sump lubrication systems require gravity removal, sometimes from two/three/four locations. However, I do not currently have any cars with such lubrication systems.

Plus, on my Audi's, the filters point up so I do not have to go under of lift the car. Now, only for tire rotations and brake work.

I use the Griot's Extractor and have had it for seven years and approximately 40 oil changes with no problems.

Happy Motoring

Eric

Not the OEM. I have used aftermarket magnetic drain plugs on my prior Audi's, from ECS Tuning.

edit: I haven't yet seen a magnetic version of the MkIII TT/TTS plug as it's a somewhat unique design: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...lug/06l103801/

btw: I have always been an under-car oil drain guy but am also opting for the lesser hassle route going forward since this oil filter is atop the engine. I have been under to install an O34 'dogbone' transmission mount stiffener and the belly pan isn't too difficult to deal with. Don't have to fully detach same.

Thanks for the responses.
It looks like I am in the market for an extractor.
Eric likes the Griot's, are there any others that I should consider?

Default Others that I have heard are good...

ECS Tuning has one...

Northern Tool has a multi-fluid version.

However, I am so satisfied with griot's - I was happy to spend the extra $$$

I'm a big fan of Griot's Garage products, I just happened to go with the Motive extractor (vacuum system) via ECS Tuning as I had prior gotten a Motive brake bleeder (pressurized system): https://www.ecstuning.com/b-motive-p...6-liters/1715/

Canister type Oil filter: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ach/06l115562/

Griot's extractor: https://www.griotsgarage.com/product...FYlWDQodFaMMgA

btw: I've historically used Mobil 1 0w-40 European formula. This engine requires 6 qt with filter change.

Related: a 32mm socket is required for oil filter canister removal, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Assenmacher-S...+Filter+Socket

edit: I don't know how a Walmart link replaced my posted Amazon (less expensive on latter).
