I've had a vagcom for years and years. Ross-tech used to suggest the program from OBD-2.com for use on non-Audis, so I got a copy long ago for work on my Nissan.

Now I have a new laptop with no serial port, so I just upgraded my HEXCOM serial to USB (will arrive Monday). Alex at OBD-2 is not sure if this USB cable works with his sw and I maybe should have just bought his serial to USB adapter for $12. See bottom of this page:

I also now notice that vagcom has a 'generic mode' (never noticed 'cause I never needed it).

So what is my best way for working on the Nissan? Anybody use the OBD-2 software (it's really nice)? Other suggestions....?

We only support and guarantee the use of VAG-COM on VW/Audi, but if Alex Peper's software worked through your old HEX-COM to talk to that Nissan, then the HEX-USB+CAN should work with the Generic OBD-2 function in VC. It certainly shouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I will try the generic function. But before that existed (long, long ago) Ross-tech recommended getting the OBD-2 sw for non-Audis, and had special pricing set up with them. It's really nice sw and I'd still like to give it a shot too.

Alex at OBD-2 asked me if your USB cable has direct serial conversion virtual serial port.

No, the USB Interfaces are not designed for use with other software.
