Default Steady or Blinking?

Go to Options, click TEST...

Default Steady red

i'm not with the car at the moment, but iirc the "test" option said something about an intermittent K line - i will post more fully tonight.

Default sorry, i was wrong

it is blinking red. the actual test read-out is:

Port Status: OK
Interface: Found!
Type: Ross-Tech HEX-USB
Version: 1.32
Status: Questionable
K1: SHORT TO GROUND
K2: OK

likely causes anyone? no work done on the car recently, and it used to work fine.

my proposal is that i check the radio first, and then look to isolate each component on the "k" line one by one.

radio, a/c, instruments, tcm, ecm - does this make sense?

question: does powering off the componment isolate it from the k-line, or do i have to physically disconnect the line?

thanks for the help...

Default Powering a component off does not isolate it frome the K-line.

For example, a Symphony radio with a blown fuse will clamp the K-line to ground. Your approach of disconnecting this is the correct one. Start with any that aren't functioning correctly.

Default found it!

in the 1st component i tried - the radio - the k-line had a solder joint which had worn through it's shielding and was grounding against the frame.

thanks all!

I am working on a 99 A6Q Avant with VIN WAUDA24B9XN043767 that has had its wiring harnesses and control modules swapped into it to repair flood damage (the repair was done using a dry 98 A6 4 door). With the VCDS current release no connection with any of the car's control modules is possible and VCDS always says "K1 short to ground" and VAG1552 says "K wire not switching to B+". There is power to pin 1 and pin 16 of the OBD2 port. No voltage is present at the k wire pin 7 of the OBD2 port. All nine of the control modules and/or devices on the K line have been disconnected one at a time and all have been disconnected simultaneously with the same result (K1 short to ground). Following the advice given in other postings I checked that the Symphony radio has power and operates when connected to the vehicle harness. Would an open, pulled or cut K wire from the OBD2 plug to the A76 connection (this connection is shown as the common point for most of the control module's K lines) in the I/P wiring harness cause this condition? Does anyone know where the A76 connection is located the I/P wiring harness?

No, an "open" K-wire would not cause this. Something is keeping the K-wire at ground.

Uwe can you explain a little more about your above posting "a Symphony radio with a blown fuse will clamp
the k-line to ground" ? Would a Symphony radio that has been completely removed from a 99 A6 also "clamp" the K-line to ground? If not, can you explain why the Symphony radio blown fuse problem occurs?
