Default Ross Wiki and Bentley yield nothing.

Car is a B6 2002 A4 1.8TQM Avant.

Drove car this morning for 35 minutes. Stopped and turned off car. Restarted car < 10 minutes, and got a right rear bulb warning in the instrument cluster.

Pulled off rear tail light assembly and looked at bulbs. Brake light bulb appeared burnt out (bulb with two elements). Did not have a spare, so double-checked operation of all the bulbs with ignition turned on and they checked out fine -- parking/running light, turn signal, backup light and brake light all work.

Used VAG-COM to check DTC's and found fault for Address 01 and 09. Cleared codes and Address 01 went away, but 09 still present, even though all bulbs are operating as they should be. Scans below.

Had to drive car. Cluster warning about right rear light appeared again on start up -- stayed there for about 15~20 minutes, then went away.

Check of Bentley returned reference to P1654 for Address 01 (but no steps to troubleshoot) and nothing for Address 09. Ross Wiki gave nothing for both Addresses. AW Search yielded inquires for P1654 for Address 01, but no follow up posts.

Can anyone give me any ideas how to start trouble shooting this? The P1654 on Address 01 has me concerned that I may have something major related to electrical system.

Some additional background on car:

- Car is garaged every night.
- Still has stock battery from the day I bought it new. Think it may be near it life expectancy, but I have had no issues with it.
- No work has been done to it recently that disconnected the battery.
- Back in early November, wife was 250 miles into a road trip, experiencing heavy downpours, when she called from the road with a headlight levelor warning in the instrument cluster. AW Search yielded a stop/shutdown/restart sequence that I had her do that made the cluster warning disappear. Cleared the DTC when she came home a few days later, and that cluster warning never reappeared.
- In the past, it was infrequent to not have all doors and trunk lid auto-unlock on shutdown (maybe once in a week or two). Within the last 3~5 days, much more frequent to not have auto-unlock work on shut down (2 of every 3 shutdowns).

Any input/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Default Looks like lots of controllers not responding.

Does anything else in the car not work?

Default A couple of things come to mind, one may be related the other maybe not.

One thing that I have noticed last month or so, is an occasionally single beep within approx 5 seconds after start up. Happens occasionally, 1 every 10 (or more) start ups.

It's a very short, faint, quick beep -- not a chirp from the alarm siren.

Can never determine if the beep is coming from the cluster or somewhere else. VAG'ing has never yielded anything.

Have had continuing on-and-off again DTC's related to the HVAC flap motors being blocked or intermittent voltage. DTC's have happened for a few years now every 4~5 months or so, most only once, the left flap multiple times. No related DTC's since Sept/Oct. Attributed DTC's to early B6 flap motors with same issues -- HVAC TSB highlights this prob and solution is upgraded/revised flap motors as replacements. Follows is a scan summaries of those faults. Have yet to pull the VISA trigger to DIY replace with new/revised motors since only convenience related.

Other than that, the car still runs strong and looks new.

Default

Check the battery connections and the grounds, they can cause similar weird behavior.

Default Thanks for the replies Andy, I appreciate it.

Will check the battery and alternator grounds for condition and contact. Can't think off-hand of any other grounds to check.

Will try and get the car in somewhere soon for a load test.

Saw the post below about the ATG Diaganostics Training Manual. Looks like a good resource. Contemplating on picking one up from you.

Default hmmm, a now 5-6 year old battery? probably a good idea to replace anyway, whether it's the

culprit or not. it's a drain to the system and will cause all sorts of problems.

Default Is the fault the same with the bulb in or out?

Might possibly give you an idea if it's along the ground side or the supply side if it's different.

Default Are you familiar with using a DVM to measure circuit continuity and resistance values?

Any troubleshooting tips I could offer depend on your experience. Aside from that, there is either excessive circuit resistance somewhere in the tail light circuit, due to various possible causes, or the Central Electric Control Module is defective.
Regarding the central locking Unlock with key removal, the failure to unlock consistently, is evidence of ignition switch mechanism wear, or need for lubrication. Notice how the consistent activation of the unlock to work properly the first time the key is removed, is effected by the steering wheel position when the key is pulled. Often, moving the steering wheel slightly to a different position before the key is pulled will result in unlock activation if it did not do so the first try. If the steering column lock has any pressure on it from the wheels when the key is pulled, that can cause the igniton switch to hang up inside enough to fail to completely contact the switch contacts that signal he Central Convenience Module to active the central unlock. The ignition switch/lock assembly in my '03 was replaced by warranty for this problem.

BTW, to obtain troubleshooting help for anything electrical, the "service manual", directs you to consult the Guided Fault Finding function of the VAS service scan tools. If you had followed that instruction, the information needed to find the problem will be found there, negating the need to inquire here....

(Bitter sarcasm intended. Through no fault of Ross-Tech or Bentley Publishers, AoA's negligent failure to provide electrical systems and devices troubleshooting and repairs help in the "service manual" is a fraud in my opinion.
I literally cannot comprehend how AoA thinks advice to consult the GFF is relevant or helpful to the average person/Audi owner/indy shop trying to find and fix an electrical systems problem with their Audi!)

Default Thanks diagnosticator1, I very much value your participation on AW and the B6 forum

Thanks for the response.

Regarding the central locking/unlock...thanks for the tip. I will spray the key slot of the ignition switch with some WD40. I've noticed more frequently the unlock not working when the car has been turned off after pulling into my garage -- flat floor, wheels straight, no pressure on the steering system. Will make note if moving the steering wheel slightly will engage unlock feature.

Yes, I own and have experience using a digital volt meter, and feel capable if I have instructions to follow -- trouble shooted a starting problem on a 1990 Honda using my Chilton and Haynes resources.

I wonder if your version of the Bentley (online version) provides the link/info to consult the "Guided Fault Finding function of the VAS" tool. My CD version of the Bentley does not. Consulting my versions "Diagnostic Codes" part of the Bentley yields nothing more than what I mentioned in my previous post. Using the error code, search functionality of the Bentley only leads me to the same area of the Bentley -- no link or reference to Guided Fault Finding function.

Spending about 1/2 hour with the info "Guided Fault Finding" from your post led me to:

Repair Manuals > Electrical Equipment > 90 Instruments > Instrument Cluster > On Board Diagnostic (OBD), function

I take it that this is the procedure you refer to? (I've included the Bentley info below)

<b>Audi &gt; B6 Platform &gt; 2002 - 2005
Electrical Equipment
90 - Instrument ClusterOn Board Diagnostic (OBD), function</b>

The instrument cluster is controlled by an internal microprocessor with On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If malfunctions occur in monitored sensors and components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory.

Troubleshoot instrument cluster malfunctions and perform OBD program functions using VAS 5051/5052 tester in mode "Guided Fault Finding".

VAS 5051/5052 connected and in mode "Guided Fault Finding":

- Enter appropriate model, equipment and model year information and press "&gt;" to confirm.

After the DTC memory of all control modules has been checked:

- Press "Go to" "Go to" button
- Select: "Function / Component Selection"
- Select: "Body (Repair Group 01; 27; 50 - 97)"
- Select: "Electrical Equipment (Repair Groups 01; 90 - 97)"
- Select: "01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems"
- Select: "Instrument Cluster"
- Select appropriate option
- Follow tester prompts.

Lastly....I concur with your "bitter sarcasm" comment. I find the Bentley totally lacking on many trouble shooting and diagnostic information in comparison to finding same info in other resources for other makes of cars. The existence of AW and its helpful members makes up for the Bentleys shortcomings.
