x-post - allroad 402 mod problems - login dropped
hello all,
just got a 2001 allroad 2.7t 6sp yesterday morning. after testing and saving the value for channel 01, my laptop started hanging up. this caused the mod to be "unsuccessful". per the directions, i started the process over again. each time, i am encountered with varying errors. i'm in my office right now, but here is a very non-exact description - windows warning "controller uses unkown protocol", all red text in 4 text fields, insanely high "stored value" numbers, etc... is there some sort of trick to get my laptop talking to the controller better? possibly some com settings? thanks. j.

What version of VAG-COM are you using?
What does the writing say on the top of the screen when you start the program? What does the writing say on the connector that plugs into the car?

> 90% processor before hanging -ideas?
Andy,
the other issue i'm seeing is that the processor is sitting at around 70-80% the entire time i'm connected to the controller. right when the session is dropped, the processor is spiking to greater than 90%. i tried everything again last night with batteries fully charged on the laptop, no anti-virus, network connections disabled, and nothing else running besides VAG-COM. still having the same issue constently, but never at the same time. any ideas? thanks. j.

Try the "Reduce CPU Usage" stuff on the Options screen
70-80% is normal without those -- and gives the most precise timing, but some rare PC's don't like it. Worth a shot anyway. Would be interesting to see if you still spike to 90%.
Have you tried running the laptop on AC power?
What kind of machine is it? Make, Model, CPU, RAM, version of Windows?

System Specs
I stopped by a friend's house, and his laptop worked with few problems with ISO-COM connection. My laptop is an older IBM ThinkPad T23, p3 - 1133mhz, 256mb ram (probably not enough), running win xp pro sp2. I'm guessing from my research that the controller likes to "talk" a lot. So, my lack of processor speed and RAM is causing the connection to be dropped on my end. Since the car is in operating order again, I'm going to wait to test the "Reduce CPU Usage" setting until the next window my friend has to help out. I'll share my results at that time. should i email you guys? Thanks for the help. j.

Your PC is more that fast enough, and has more than enough RAM.
However, I'm willing to bet that there's *something* running on it that's interfering with VAG-COM's ability to communicate in the real-time manner that the car demands. However, finding the offending program or service can sometimes be "interesting." Tips at the link below.
