Looking electric

For any fans of the last-gen A1 that were a bit saddened by Audi's lack of a performance variant for this generation can now breathe a sigh of relief. This, ladies and gentlemen, is as close as we might get. Audi has gone on the record as saying that they are not looking to develop a hot hatch version of the A1 Sportback, citing high costs as the major factor.

Not a bad bump

So what kind of additions are we talking about from ABT? Well, how about the ones that culminate in a little car that makes 236 bhp and 266 lb-ft of torque? That's a healthy increase from the stock 197 bhp and 236 lb-ft that comes from the factory. Unfortunately, that power is just going to the front wheels with an open differential and, most likely, lots of wheelspin with hard launches.

Low but not slow

To give the car a new sportier stance, the A1 has been lowered via a set of suspension springs to as much as 30 millimeters or 1.18 inches. Setting off the new aggressive height is a set of custom 18-inch wheels that shine with a gloss black finish.

Missing that special something

Since the car is just FWD, the only connections to quattro present with three open slots right under the hood, which is a nod to the '84 Group B rally race car. Looking at the previous gen's S1 for comparison, the ABT A1 bests it by just 8 more horsepower but loses with 7 less lb-ft of torque. Keep in mind that the S1 also had all-wheel-drive quattro as well.

Maybe we'll see a proper S1 in the future?

While the ABT A1 may not be an all-out pocket rocket, it is a nice performance package for those who desire a little more chest hair from their urban street fighter. We all know if the A1 had a quattro option this car would be a hit with the mods but for now, it's still a great buy at just €3,790.
