The headlight design of the Audi A6 e-tron is truly special, so why not come up with a clever way to show it off?

Concept cars are known for having some pretty crazy tech, over-the-top styling, and features that would never wind up on a production car, for various reasons. But we have to give the new Audi A6 e-tron concept, recently revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show, a lot of credit for doing something that we’ve simply never seen before – projecting a video game onto walls via its high-tech headlights.

The Digital Matrix LED headlights of the Audi A6 e-tron are so complex and groundbreaking that they received their own detailed explanation at the car’s unveiling, which is when the automaker mentioned this nifty little feature. Audi says the car’s headlights “achieve almost cinematic quality,” and that its spaceship racing game, developed by Audi designers, was designed to give the driver and passenger a fun way to pass the time while the EV’s battery is charging.

This concept is nothing new in the electric vehicle world, as Tesla offers an array of games built into the infotainment systems of all of its models. But those games are only playable on the car’s interior screen(s). The beauty of the A6 e-tron concept’s design is that its game is projected in what Audi calls an “XXL” format in front of it – several meters wide, in fact.

Players control the game via their smartphones and can play either while sitting in the vehicle or while standing in front of it. The only real downside to this pretty amazing and clever little feature is the fact that the game can only be displayed in black and white, but is that really a big deal when we’re talking about one of the most innovative concept car ideas in recent memory?

Luckily, this video from CarWow shows the game in action briefly, so we can get a sneak peek at it. It’s a truly amazing peek into the future, and one that we certainly hope makes it to production. Audi obviously wanted a more creative way to show off the A6 e-tron’s new headlight design, and it goes without saying that the inclusion of a video game was one heck of an impressive way to do it.
