Top 10 Best Audi Engines of All Time
6. 2.2L I5 (Audi S4 1991 – 1994)
The aftermarket has a knack for finding real gems in the rough, and a strong support pool helps give the 2.2 liter inline five cylinder number six in this countdown. Audi first introduced the world to the idea of a five cylinder engine over 42 years ago, and this spirited half pint has left a trail of tire tracks and performance achievements in its wake. First being introduced in the 1980s, the engine underwent its fair share of revisions, and in its most potent form, was capable of 232 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The engine had an iconic rallying pedigree, and the aftermarket helped it find its second wind with horsepower numbers that easily crossed the ionosphere. The success of this five cylinder later inspired Audi to revive it, but we’ll save that for further down the list.
