Cooling problem.....
I have done the searches, nothing. This is the problem...we got a 1993 90 quattro for $1025, with 142k on it and a blown head gasket. The were other problems but none that seemed to bad, and that i could not fix with cialowicz car or a trip or two to the yard. This is what is wrong...I did the gaskets, a job i have done many times and twice on a 12v before this time. Now everything is going good and nice. I go to put in coolant and the plasitc bleeder is broken. Junk yard trip and it is fixed. SO we go and start the procedure all over once more. Now the thing is the fans take forever to come on, engine takes way to long to get warm, heater is on full fan and high temp. and does not make as hot air as it should. I went for a test drive a few mins ago, a fairly long one. And at first when you went harder on the gas it left a smoke cloud like ive never seen before. However it did go away. But then when the engine temp gets to the first line past the first bold and a little farther the heater blows cold, Yet then the heater comes back and then the engine goes back down to the first bold or very close (aka normal?). It did this all the time. I went up to 6k on it in 2nd gear and it runs fine, sure not as fast as my car but still works well. When i get home the expansion tank is empty and i go and open it and all the air comes out and then water comes in from the lower pipe that goes across the engine bay to the thermostat area.
Now the blown gasket was the pass side and the o-ring in the cooling pipes, the metal ones that bolt to the back of the heads, the ring was fried. Now I just put a thermostat in today, and it appears the pump has just been changed as well and the timing belt. Here is the question, is there a blockage somewhere, air building up some place, what is wrong??? Im going to take out the intake manafold tomorrow to look at the pipes to see if a clog.
I allowed my car(1995 90) to heat up at an idle rate and things seemed very simular. Yet the 93' heater/engine temp. problem still exists. THere are more things wrong but they are simple things. This is the major problem.
Thankyou for any info.
André
Also the "mods" done are a cheep cone filter and a massive exaust with dual tips that angle up. Also someone has taken out the intake before b/c it had a newer gasket in it. And i did exactally what bently says to do to bleed this engine, i did it several times and still did not fix the problem)
