Default I feel like a noob. Bentley says we have a secondary air injection system on our car...

well I'm familiar with the concept and definately know the 30V has one but cannot track it or any of it's associated parts down on the 2.8 12V. Further I can't even find the test procedure for it in the Bentley hard copy yet there is one in the same manual for the 30V cars. So either I'm a dumb-*** or we do NOT have any such thing or Bentley omitted the test procedure or incorrectly listed the AIR for our cars.

Anyone help out with a diagram, information or test procedure?

Default I can hear it sometimes, sounds like a hairdryer

I think the air pump is somewhere near the alternator, but don't take my word for it.

its right where you alluded to on the 30V but high profile absent on the 12V

Default I just found it on the 30v

It's right behind the front bumper on the passenger side. Looks pretty big. Now, I can't find where it is, if we even have it, on the 12v. If we don't have it, what's that hairdryer noise that I hear for a couple minutes after starting the cold engine?

What I did find in one of my repair manuals is the vacuum valve that is part of the secondary air injection system. It's on top of the plenum. The little blue one-way valve (its black end towards vacuum valve) is hooked up to it. Can't find the air pump, but it must be close to the exhaust manifold, right?

Default thats the other thing I didn't mention but am also plagued by is the total absence...

of any associated plumbing associated with the AIR pump if we had one in/on our engines. That pump moves a lot of air and there's no associated air hoses or ducts on our cars to handle that kind of CFM.

Only thing I can associate with your hair dryer sound is the EGR self test that occurs after startup which in our case being open to atmosphere is audible. But thats just a wild guess.

Default here's another interesting aside...

If I try to re-code my ECU to that of a european model I get an error code on the VAG that reads "this option not available on cars with secondary air injection."

So now where did they hide that sucker!?! I have an entire spare engine with heads, pan off and all pistons removed and I never removed any air pump and I removed the damn thing from the car! No parts were lost, missing, unidentified or omitted when I removed it. There was no air pump!

Yet as Mori said I do have that little blue/back check valve thats somehow tied into the secondary air injection system on both my engines.

I got up at 3:20am to be slapped in this face with this enigma!?!
