Would a bad temperature sensor throw a code and/or show up on a VAG?
As of lately my coolant temperature gauge stays cold around two ticks up instead of the usual 12 o'clock.
I'm guessing it's a sensor and the engine is not actually running cold all the time.
or could this be a bad thermostat?

Generally when the thermostat is bad, the temp will move up and down
depending on the situation. If the car gets cooler when driving at highway speeds, then starts to creep up when you're sitting at a light, you probably have a bad thermostat.

When my T-stat was stuck open, it hardly ever got fully hot, but
it would still fluctuate based on speed. If there's no fluctuation, and it's always in the same spot, it's most likely not the T-stat.
If it's still pretty cold where you are I would imagine it would be hard to tell. During the summer, mine would heat up on 100* days, but very slowly. Then once it started to get cold it never got up to full temp.
So pretty much what I'm trying to say is, if the gauge does move around based upon speed, it's probably the T-stat. If the gauge is constantly in the same spot, it's something else. But like I said you may have to wait for warmer weather to see a difference depending on where you live.

It could be a bad motor that controls the openinga and closing of flaps to direct the air. My 1995 90 has 3 of those motors.
One just died Nov. 2nd coming home from Quattrofest 2008 in Portland. This one was located up uder the dash and behind the radio.
It is a Bosch controller motor
