Default Yo Mori, quick oil quetion for ya.

Thanks for answering all the questions that i've ever had, u've helped a lot. Here's another one. Is M1 15w-50 too heavy? Will it provide the viscosity that i'll need, or should 10w-40 be better? I live in Atlanta. The temp is kinda weird here though. I'm just worried if i'll get the protection that i want with a 15w-50 with less oil consumption. Thanks again big man.

Default Just because it's thicker it doesn't necessarily mean it will curb consumption

You should use an oil that resists blowby better, and that's not only due to viscosity. M1 15W-50 is not ideal for reducing oil consumption. The 15W- part is less than ideal, because no oil is thin enough when cold (even at 100F) and the 50 part is a bit on the heavy side. If you run consistently oil temps higher than 250 F, then you may want to consider an xW-50.

Try Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 Synthetic European Formula. If you can't find it, any Jiffy Lube should be able to order a case (6 qt ca $35) for you.

FYI, Mobil is coming out with a full synthetic 5W-40 for gas engines in May. However, at least if you have oil consumption issues, the Pennzoil Platinum, which carries VW 502 approval, should be a better choice.

How high is oil consumption?

Default Is this the new M1 rebadged Truck and SUV? I managed to speak to a Mobil rep the other day and...

he told me the M1 many of us have used is now rebadged as "Turbo Diesel" oil with no official gas rating though it's supposed to be the exact same 5w-40 oil, only in a new container. Hmmm...you probably have a lot more info. so maybe you can clarify. I am seeing the Pennzoil Platinum out there on the shelves, just not the 5w-40 though one can order it easily.

Default Not, it's a different oil -- M1 ESP Formula 5W-40

data sheet with specs

It's a low SAPS oil -- good for your cats. It carries no VW approval. Specs look good, though. However, for minimizing oil consumption it won't be the ideal choice.

My 5W-40 Turbo Diesel is supposedly identical to the previous M1 5W-40 T&SUV, but without gas engine approval listed on the bottle.

Default The consumption is about 1 quart/ 2-3 weeks, my best guess.

As far as protection, and viscosity will the Pennzoil suffice?

Default I've seen it only at a local auto parts place (no chain)

I don't know why it's so damn hard to find good oil!

Default But how much do you drive in 2-3 weeks?

Of course it will protect just fine. As I said, it even carries VW 502 approval.

Default That's a pretty good question. I love using that engine brake though. :)

That vacuum is probably my worst enemy at the moment, but when i do drive it's a good distance. When i do think about it, i've been driving a little more lately, that's a good cause for the slightly larger consumption.

Default It is hard to find the good stuff. I'm thinking about stopping my Jiffy Lube or a Pennzoil shop.

They have brand name shops around here like that, just the hard part is finding them. I'll use that 15w-50 so that I don't have to give it back, can't find the receipt anyway. It's only the next 5k miles.
