rough running A6 2.7t engine
I have a 2000 A6 2.7T quattro and runs rough,, especially in gear. took to PepBoys and got a diagnostic on it. Came up with a P1338 and P0301. I know the P1338 is a camshaft sensor and the P0301 is a misfire in the #1 cylinder. Changed the coil pack and plug in #1 cylinder, also checked the coolant temp sensor too. Still runs rough, read on forums that you can disconnect the coolant temp sensor and will still run. also read that engine will still run if camshaft sensor is not working.
Should i replace the camshaft sensor or look for another problem? also where is the sensor located. I am a DIY person but havent worked on Audis much. Need some help and advice.
Thanks

Do you have the capability to scan and log data? If so, see if you can log your misfires, then try swapping the ignition modules on the air breather and see if the misfire moves from one side to the other. Also, pull your plugs and check their condition. You could check the rubber plug boot between the coil and plug while your at it. Look for tracks where it might be arcing. Also check the accordion boot between maf sensor and y-pipe, if it's split, you'll get false air and incorrect fuel metering. I've seen this personally on many occasions on all types of cars.
These are probably the most probable causes for rough engine performance.
