Default 2.8 specifications? Real development?

I've searched around here & there and have not found the specs that I'm interested in. As a new audi owner and old Honda fanatic, I'm curious to know detailed powerplant specifications so other "development" might be considered.

The new acqusition is a 99 A6q Avant. Of course, I've ran into numerous threads talking about the three most basic ways to free up HP - cold air intake/K&N, cat. back exhaust, and ECU tuning. Those are a given, along with weight loss, but I'm not going to explore that one.

I've also seen the supercharger option. I'm not so interested in that one, as I've had years of supercharger experience with my Civic. I'd rather look into naturally aspirated performance, or turbo (which apparently isn't feasable?).

If my salary allowed it, believe me I would definately chosen an S model. As it stands, the A6 is actually a lot more than I expected (except under the hood, which is exactly what I expected).

Does anyone have or know where I can get information such as:
-Engine code
-Bore & Stroke
-Compression Ratio
-Rod/Stroke Ratio

I haven't been able to negotiate any "shop time" with the wife. Since I arrived last Saturday with the car, I've driven it twice. So, I haven't had an opportunity to even look under the plastic engine cover.
Are these DOHC, SOHC?
How are the 5 valves configured (3 intake, 2 exhaust?)
Do other Audi engines offer compatible performance parts such as cams?

I'd appreciate any answers or sources of info. I will be getting a Bentley manual and VAG COM...

Thanks in advance, and thanks for this site!
-TJ

Default It's a 90deg DOHC

The stroke is 3.4", the bore is 3.25", the compression is 10.3:1<ul><li><a href="https://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/99/a6.shtml">All the info you need is here</a></li></ul>

Default not to dissapoint but...k&n filter with stock box is crap...

its dual dohc (2 cams for each bank intake/exhaust) [i think 3 intake 2 exhaust but im not sure]...as far as bore stroke etc i would expect that to be in bently manual
cat back wont buy you much on an NA car...as far as ecu tuining goes since you seem like a diy person check out lemmwinks (and not the **** dewlling hamster)... if you want to save money on vag com buy a cable off ebay($45 shipped) and a liscense code ($99 i think)...not bad...as far as weight removal goes im sure theres some feasable things that can be removed...4750 is huge!

Default Excellent! Thanks!!

I wasn't necessarily sold on the K&amp;N...I have heard stories about excess air filter oil ruining the MAF...

Yep, I am definately a DIY'r. Thanks for the tip on the lemmwinks, I'll check it out.

Thanks for that link 4®ings! Looks like I need to spend some quality time looking in all the dark corners of this site.

Default You're welcome

K&amp;N oil is only dangerous if applied incorrectly. Don't wash and re-oil them, just buy new ones and you'll be fine.

Lemmiwinks probably won't work for you, as your '99 model engine is Non-DBW. It's a free download so give it a go, but chances are you're out of luck there. Still, get a VAG, it's worth it's price in gold even without Lemmiwinks.

Don't discount the supercharger. While a turbo (or even bi-turbo) 2.8 is possible, the engine can only take 7-8 PSI of boost safely, which would not utilize the turbo setup to full potential. It's been done, but the costs are not worth the effort. A supercharger provides plenty of reliable, streetable power.

Default supercharger

While I'm now happy with my Civic, I've got sort of a bad taste for non-intercooled boost. Unless the Audi charger employs an intercooler, I've found that the anemic dry air in Colorado combined with summer temperatures approaching triple digits is a bad environment for a SC to operate - the Civic only make 9psi.

The result is plenty of detonation unless using a blend of 100 octane unleaded and our 91 super. Then there's always the Toluene option...

Thanks again for the help. I shouldn't worry so much about the power since I won't be driving it everyday. Realistically, I'd just like to recover power lost due to altitude.

Default Most don't, mine does

The PES G2 s/c is not intercooled and cannot be intercooled due to lack of space. Their earlier G1 model (which is the one I have) can be intercooled, however there are only a few of these around, so it's not readily available.

That being said, while the G2 does get pretty hot and looses power due to heat soak, there is no detonation. PES has done excellent job tuning their chip to ensure it's reliable and problem free.

<center><img src="http://hellsditch.bvdep.com/pictures/lp06.jpg"></center><p>First off welcome to the Audi wing of the asylum. I just bought an A6 avant for my wife after having enjoyed my A4 for 3 years now. There are chips for the 2.8, although they can't make as big a difference as chips for a forced-induction engine can. On the positive side, they're cheaper, although once you add in the chip for the tiptronic transmission it's actually a little higher. I have the GIAC chip for my 1.8T A4 and like it a lot. If I were going to chip the A6 I'd probably get the GIAC. I might look on ebay, the classifieds here at Audiworld, or maybe the parts section at www.audifans.com before I bought one new.

BTW is your screen name a Pogues reference or is there a geological origin to the name? Those are some awesome pics at www.hellsditch.org. Been hiking only once or twice in the Southwest myself (Zion, Bryce) but nothing so off-trail as in your pics.<ul><li><a href="http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shared/part_detail.cfm?PMaI=1&amp;PMoI=28&amp;PEI=3&amp;P P=a6_28_chips.cfm&amp;PPT=Chips&amp;IL=GIACChips"> GIAC chip for 2.8 30V V6</a></li></ul>

Default Pogues, Indeed!!!

Thanks for the compliments on our website!

Yes, my Friend Dave &amp; I are big Shane MacGowan/Pogues/Popes fans. Hells Ditch seemed to fit the landscape in Utah's "wasteland" so we adopted it. If you get a chance to visit Utah again, I'd definately seek out some slot canyons. Most are totally accessable, and not so far off the beaten path...just be aware of flash flood potential, that's one reason we go in the winter.
The Needles District of Canyonlands is really nice as well. We were just in Chesler Park 2 weeks ago.

Thanks also for the opinion on the GIAC chip, I'll probably go that route first, along with the tip chip to liven up the sluggish tranny. The supercharger is tempting too - after looking around at superchargedaudi yesterday. The G1 intercoolable kit really seems to be the way to go in my opinion. I'd have to sell off a Honda or two though!
