1.8t AEB bad?
I've heard from various people that the 1.8T AEB engine is unreliable and faulty...anyone heard similar things? Of course none of the these people could tell me WHY its is bad; could anyone shed some light on this?

Sure they are!
That's why my AEB doesn't have 177k miles on it, is fun and peppy, reliable, and easy to fix.

NOW it's the ATW engines you want to stay away from. Sludgemonster, single model year, first DBW engine.

Thanks Nate. Now was the AEB and the ATW made in the same year? Maybe these people were putting all of the engines (not knowing they were actually different )produced in the same year into one group...

AEB has been a very durable engine.
The only major fault is the ignition module, which isn't that serious and easily replaced- it also is rather common on all A4's I think.
I agree, easy to work on and trouble free.

AEB and ATW are both exactly the same block, the Sludge issue is with the 06a block which is in the 2001+ A4. Funny thing is that I had never even heard of a sludge issue with the 1.8t till a few years into the B6 production years. So for us B5 owners the sludge issue is with the 2001-2001.5 AWM engines.

The nice part is that you can remove the ignition module and rewire the car up to use the ATW coil packs. Problem solved.
