Default Is the 1.8T an interference engine?

i.e. if my timing belt snaps, do I have 20 valves to replace?

Yes, I'm a DSM owner, could you tell? :-)

You will have UP TO 20 valves to replace (depends on your luck).

Default Regarding timing belt - I have warranty until 75K, should I replace at 60K or wait

and see if it breaks before 75K and get it replaced under warranty?

Default Timing belt is age and mileage dependent. If you're going to gamble, make CERTAIN that any possible

repair will be covered under the warranty. Talk to a person, and ask them...get their name. You're not talking small potatoes here, if the belt does break prematurely.

Default Timing belt failure == its on you.

Well sorta. If the timing belt is specified to be replaced at 60K miles and you dont do it, then its on you. But technically a timing belt is a drive belt..

Default It's not spec'd at 60K, it's spec'd at 105K (or something like that), but I definitely agree!

If that belts snaps, it qualifies as an exclusion.

Default So that said, why are so many engines designed as interference engines?

What is the reason that's done? I know on older V8's they have valve reliefs in the pistons, why has that fallen out of favor?

the Toyota hi-po engines are *not* (MR-2T, Supra TT), I understand most Honda motors are, the 1.8T is, the DSM's 4g63 is. What's the deal, anybody know?
