2001 A4 Top End Seals

2001 A4 Top End Seals
The car is a 2.8 Quattro in for it's 80k service. Dealer calls to say the top end seals need to be done and it's not unusual.
Is it unusual?
And if I don't cough up the $1500 what will it do to the car?

Re: ask them what top end seals are. probably valve cover seals, which aren't that hard to do.
Valve cover seals as well as cam seals.
Slowly leaking oil all over engine block.
Should have been found earlier when I questioned the oil light coming on 5000 miles after an oil change. They said that was normal. Of course this car had the free service for 5yr/50k so they would have eaten that one.
