2001+ Oil pan sensor, what does that do......

2001+ Oil pan sensor, what does that do......
I was checking out a buddys 2001 A4 and he has a sensor at the bottom of the oil pan. what's up with that?...I have a 99.5 and only have empty slot under the oil pan. Also the dip stick is mounted and secured diffrent....anyone care to comment!

Audi tech suggested to me
that the sensor might be used in future models (or even 01) to help control next-service-milage value.
I asked if it was like BMW - measuring ph, or whatnot in the engine. He didn't have the details and couldn't even confirm current US cars made use of it... but it sounded good
